Learning through The Great Learning

2015-06-19 来源: 51due教员组 类别: Report范文

这是一篇关于《The Great Learning》的读后感report
The first book I read is a classical book on Confucianism called The Great Learning. This book is the bible for people following Confucianism, describing the principle of Confucianism as well as the value people should uphold in society. For almost two thousand years, this book has influenced people from generation to generation and it has laid the foundation of civil society in China. You might wonder why I would read such a great book so earlier in my life and would it be difficult for me to really understand this book? You will find answers in my story.
In the book of The Great Leaning, there are words of wisdom on personal level such as how to learn, how to be a decent people and on state level such as how to govern and how to treat your own people. Many sentences from The Great Leaning have become famous idioms that people use a lot in everyday life. One of the most famous one is “致知在格物” which means that if you want to learn more about the world, you need to observe everything closely to get to the bottom of it. This idiom has been used as the principle of learning in school. Theses words of wisdom in this book have become the paragon of social value and they are the foundation of an orderly civil society. However, for me, this book means a change and my time with my father.
When I was in the 6th grade, I was what they call a troublemaker. I didn’t like school or homework. I scribbled on textbook in class instead of paying attention to what teacher said and went out to play with my buddies after school instead of going right back home to do homework first like other kids. My mischievous behavior finally caught the attention of my head teacher. She called my parents to school to tell them what a terrible kid I was in school and they should discipline me or I might end up like a loser who would achieve nothing in life. After that, I was so afraid that my father would be very disappointed with me and even beat me when we went back home. However, he did something that I could never forget. When we went back home, he didn’t say anything. He then asked me to follow him to his study where he found a dilapidated book off the shelf and told me that this is the book he read a lot when he was a kid. He handed it to me and told me to read it out aloud with him everyday after school. I didn’t know at that time why my dad would do that but I was just happy to get away with punishment.
When I was off school the next day, I went back home and my dad was waiting for me to start our reading plan. My father read one sentence and I would follow him. Although I didn’t understand the meaning of these words since they are in Chinese ancient prose and I didn’t even know where to stop in one sentence, I could still hear the beautiful rhyme in the prose and feel the power in those words through my father’s voice. It was the first time that I found such beauty and strength in words and books.
I read these words days after days without knowing the meaning. My father is a man of his word and he never skipped a day of reading with me. I got bored sometime and just wanted to give up this mundane reading thing everyday, so I told him all kinds of lame reasons to get away with this reading thing, but once I did that, my dad would say nothing and punish me with reading them twice or more. I didn’t understand why he insisted on doing that until the day when I started to understand that what in that book are words to live by.
My father didn’t explain the meaning of these words of this book until I have read them with him for almost a hundred times even more and I could even recite them in my sleep. Then my father started to explain every word on it. The first sentence goes “大學之道在明明德,在親民,在止於至善(What the Great Learning teaches is: to illustrate illustrious virtue; to renovate the people; and to rest in the highest excellence)”, but he didn’t use these big and abstract words to tell me what it means. He told me that this sentence tells me that the great leaning is not that hard and I only need to help others when they are in trouble, be friendly to other and try my best to do everything, then I will be a person with great learning. Before that, although these words engrained in my brain, I only recited these words without any emotion or feeling. When I understood what they meant, it suddenly hit me that these words actually meant something to me. There were not only words but also words with much deeper meaning. What used to be meaningless words combination now became something that I could truly understand and relate to.
These words from the book also gradually influenced my behavior. Words of the book are rooted so deeply in my brain that they would flash inside my head when I tried to do something reckless. I started to think twice before I do anything reckless. I stopped fooling around in school because I want to learn more words and read more books. I came home after school to my father to do our daily reading ritual instead of going out to play. My father did use a unique way to teach me a lesson with his patience and love. We didn’t stop reading until I had to leave home for school. Years have gone by, I can still remember every word in The Great Learning and these words still mean so much to me.
When I entered my teenager years. Unlike other teenager, I didn’t act out a lot or crossed the line to do something stupid. I thank my father for educating me is such unique and nice way. My personality is like my father’s a lot. He knew that if he taught me a lesson by hitting me or scolding me, I would have pushed back even harder and even became a really bad boy. Sometime a small thing like a book can change something about you. The first book taught me how to be a decent person. It also opened another door for me. After reading my first book, I started to read voraciously. I read everything I can find and I think reading really helps to shape a person. You can know things you will never have the chance to know otherwise and you can get to explore things that would never happen in real life and see things from other people’s eyes.
One of my favorite prose form the book is “物有本末,事有終始,知所先後,則近道矣(Things have their root and their branches. Affairs have their end and their beginning. To know what is first and what is last will lead near to what is taught in the Great Learning)”. Everything will have its start and end. What’s important is not how it starts or how it ends but to know how things go from start to end. Although I can’t be around my father all the time, I would always remember how he teaches me to be a good person through one book and how he loves me in his own way.
In the future, books will still be my friends and words of my first book are still what I hold dear. I will read more and be someone that my father would be proud of. I hope you find all the answers to the questions you might have as I wrote in the first paragraph. This is my literacy event or I can say this is story of my first book and my father. I am grateful that I have a father who understands me and loves me deeply and I have books that teach me right and wrong and show me how wonderful this world really is. If you are skeptical about what a book can do to you, you should pick up a book and try to read it.
