Abstract

Environmental protection has been a long-standing topic of our contemporary age. Our company, as an outstanding pioneer of our society, inevitably should bear the responsibility of advocating environmental protection. This M-Global portfolio mainly focuses on some environmentally friendly items. The first document is about defining and describing alternate energy. Its focus mainly lies on biofuels, including  biodiesel, bioalchohol, biogas, and cellusoic biofuel. This section will be detailedly introducing bioalcohol. The second document is about a memorandum proposing our company to add bike racks and expand locker room, so that more employees can choose to ride bikes to work. It can be seen as a method to encourage environmental protection. The final part is to search for some information of hybrid cars. Ten sources, including website and journals are listed in the portfolio.
The clue of this portfolio is to promote environmental protection. I also believe that this portfolio can show our determination of being a responsible pioneer in terms of protecting environment.

DEFINING AND DESCRIBING ALTERNATE ENERGY
In my initial report, I have given a brief introduction to biofuels which are beneficial to our environment. Four types of biofuels including biodiesel, bioalchohol, biogas, or cellusoic biofuel have also been briefly defined in my previous introduction. Today I will further explain details about bioalcohol and make its advantages clear.
According to fact-index, “Bioalcohol is alcohol obtained from biological sources, not from petroleum, like some methanol and ethanol. It is used like biofuel with petroleum”(http://www.fact-index.com/b/bi/bioalcohol.html). More detailed definition has been given out by hubpages. “ There are four basic alcohols (Butanol, Ethanol, Methanol and Propanol) that are transformed biologically, meaning the alcohol was generated by plants and living things versus a non-biological source such as petroleum”(http://ripkenite.hubpages.com/hub/Alternative-Fuel-Bioalcohol).
Four mainly bioalcohols are butanol, ethanol, methanol and propanol. Methanol and ethanol come from fossil fuels and biomass, while propanol and butanol are from cellulose through a tricky fermentation process. More detailedly, fermentation gives rise to ethanol and synthesis gas generates methanol. Compared with gasoline, both methanol and ethanol, as alternative fuel energy resources, have higher octane rating. However, both of them are corrosive and the conductive of fuel has also been increased. Furthermore, given by their chemical features, they cannot be transported by gas pipelines. Compared with methanol and ethanol, butanol and propanol can be transported in gas pipelines. They are less toxic and more stable than methanol. Moreover, they are more efficient than gasoline in gallon-for-gallon energy. However, the fermentation process which gives rise to butanol and propanol will generate unpleasant smell. There are many obvious advantages of biofuels in terms of protecting environment, such as reducing emission, oxidant formation and acidification. Compared with fossil fuels, biofuels can reduce the emissions of many chemicals such as “hydrocarbon, nitrogen oxide, particles, sulphur and ground ozone, even carbon monoxide”. Though it will increase the emission of acetaldehyde and formaldehyde, these two substances have few impact on our environment. Moreover, “ethanol gases create less atmospheric reactivity thus resulting in reduced oxidant (ozone) formation”. Using ethanol can remarkably reduce the emergence of gene-toxic substances, which means that cancer cases caused by air pollution will also decrease correspondently. “ Ethanol and methanol give a higher steam pressure with certain blends in petrol. With a higher blend, 20% is regained. By changing the composition in petrol, the steam pressure can remain unchanged”. Due to the fact that there is no sulphur in alcohol and lower emission of nitrogen oxide, pollution can be reduced.

Research on biofuels are continuing. As an important part of biofuels, bioalcohol are also gaining more attention given by its important role in protecting pollution. Though there are some disadvantages of bioalcohol, it is deserving to spend some efforts in exploring its potentials and protecting our environment.

SUBJECT: Encourage Pedal Power by Expanding Locker Room
I am writing this letter to reflect some issues I witness recently. Due to the lack of automobile, some of our employees prefer to ride bike to work. However, they come across some problems when choosing bike. First, there is no enough bike racks for employees to place their bikes. Second, the locker room in our company is not big enough and the amount of showers is limited. Therefore, after employees ride bikes and arrive at company, they cannot take a timely shower and change their cloth. These are factors hindering their choices of riding bikes.
As a member of our company, I sincerely recommend that we should increase the amount of bike racks and expand the size of our locker room to encourage pedal power. As far as I am concerned, the prevalence of pedal power in our company will bring forth numerous benefits.
If we add bike racks and showers and expand our locker room, our employees’ problems in terms of riding bike can be directly solved. Given by the increased bike racks, more employees can choose to ride to work without worrying about the place for their bikes. They can also take a shower timely and change into appropriate clothing after riding. Therefore, our employees do not need to fight for bike racks or showers with each other. It can create a harmonious atmosphere for our company. Without considering means of transportation to company, employees can be more focused on their jobs.
Furthermore, riding bike to work is consistent with the concept of protecting environment. Environmental protection is an important topic at our contemporary age. Issues in terms of pollution deserve our attention. A company that takes the responsibilities of protecting environment can win respect from our society. Therefore, if most of our employees decide to ride bikes to work, it can help to establish a responsible image for our company, which in turn will help our business.
Given that this is an initial proposal, I am willing to be the first one to pay double efforts if it is thought as an effective and plausible plan. I would search relevant information as much as possible through all kinds of channels. Then I will make a more detailed plan about this proposal including estimating its rough cost. I would contrive to cover all details of this plan.
I believe that if this plan was realized, it will bring us considerable benefits. What counts more is that it encourages a kind of environmental friendly means of transportation. It not only exerts its influence in our company, but also in our society. Therefore, it is meaningful to promote this plan.


RESEARCHING HYBRID CARS
