Election of 1824 In the election of 1824, John Quincy Adams was running against Andrew Jackson. One thing that effected the election of 1824 was the regional differences which soon led to the split in the Republican Party. Jackson soon won the most popular votes and with that you would think he would become president but no. since Henry clay also was running he gave his electoral votes to Adams and Adams became president. Over the next four years the split between Jackson and Adams grew. Jackson belived that he represented the “common people”. He also believed Adams represented the Easterners. This dispute created another two party system.
