Tobacco According to basic modern philosophy, men have the freedom and right to chose their fates. Our constitution gives us the freedom to of choice in all respects. The rights of a cigarette company and a smoker however, leave the rights of the non-smoking population in question. If smoking is allowed by right, then the non-smoker has never been given the right to say no the environmental smoke. However, the question of rights is deeper. If a person smokes, then does he by choice cause the cancer, early death, and failing health he receives or is he trapped by the addictive nicotine he did not realize he was choosing' Smokers are usually "trapped" by a five stage process: 1. Introduction to tobacco, 2. Experimentation with tobacco, 3. Regular usage of tobacco, 4. Increased usage of tobacco, and 5. Addiction to tobacco. Tobacco companies realize that a child is very susceptible to information he receives, not only from his parents, but his environment: TV, radio, magazines, etc. If a child sees tobacco as a goo, positive action, then he is more likely to try it. Studies have shown that 43% of children age 12 have tried cigarettes.
