Through its retail drug segment, the company sells prescription drugs and a wide assortment of general merchandise, including over-the-counter drugs, health and personal care items, cosmetics, greeting cards, household items, convenience foods, photo development services and seasonal merchandise. Through PCS Health System, Inc., the PBM segment provided pharmacy benefits management services to employers, insurance carriers and managed care companies. Rite Aid opened its first store in 1962 as a ThrifD Discount Center in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
