English Majors Job Opportunities So as I looked into this whole English idea as a major, I began by thinking I would walk into the teaching world without a problem. To my surprise, it takes more than simply a degree and a smile to get into a position like that. These days teaching positions are becoming more difficult to get, yet having an English degree has proven to be pretty valuable in the world. So I guess instead of talking about being an English teacher, which still has a possibility of being my job, I am going to talk more about the options I have as an English major and what I might do with some of those options. Yes, I would say that being an English professor would be something I might do in my later life. Maybe it could be something I would base retirement on. It seems as if that would be a smart move.
