After reading Chapter 8 of Nuts & Bolts Of College Writing, I am glad to say that I have learned a lot from within about how to better write. The first I learn is about the structure of an essay is composed of three parts and they are respectively the beginning, the middle (or body) and the ending (or conclusion), which can make an essay a complete one. At the same time, I learn the exclusive purpose of all those three parts. The more detailed condition is that the beginning aims to draw the audience’s attention, prepare a context and claim the statement. As for the middle (or body), it takes the responsibility for giving examples, connecting the general and the particular, unfolding causal relationships and using good supporting materials. And as to the ending (or conclusion), it is responsible for repeating some key points. In this way, I can always compose my writing with these three parts and always check whether I have involved in necessary and appropriate information in all the parts.

Apart from that, what has to be pointed out is that I learn about the length of a beginning and its length depends on assignment, discipline and topic. In so doing, I can determine the proper length of the essay based on the assignment, discipline and topic in the due time so that I won’t be confused at how long the introduction should be. Besides, I know how to make my beginning a good one because I can include a thesis statement, context and a starting point within it. So a fair knowledge can be obtained that the components of a beginning can be used to guide me in my future writing process in order that I can always follow the format of a beginning. At the same time, what has to be pointed out is that a beginning is better to starts with a hook so that it can better catch the attention of the wide public.

In addition, I have learned that an ending should deal with the summary of an argument and propose what has to be pointed out about how further researches can be conducted in the future in order to make up for the limitations of the current research. That is to say, simply summarizing the argument won’t end well for the essay but it would be better if you can recognize the limitations of the current research and recommendations for future researches. Only in this way can the value of the essay be played to the full and can the essay provide its insightful suggestions for the audience. Personally speaking, the ending’s simply summarizing the content will make it a little repeated and boring for the audience and they may lose interest in reading this paper.

Last but not the least, I have to say that I am the most impressed by the sentence of the writer Leo Rosten that “Words sing because they hurt. They teach. They sanctify. They were man’s first, immeasurable feat of magic.” as a matter of act, this sentence is out of my expectation because I haven’t expected that the words are so powerful. Having acknowledged the power of words, there is no doubt that I will pay more attention to the use of words in the future in order to make full advantage of words’ power in the detailed context all the time.

Based on all the above, it is obvious that I have really learned a lot from this chapter and it can undoubtedly help me better write in one way or another. As a matter of fact, I have made up my decision that I will check this chapter from time to time once I am writing an essay in the future. In this way, I can guarantee that I am following the guidelines so that I can do well in all the necessary parts, contributing to my essay’s becoming an effective one in the end. 

Personal Response Essay on Radical Evolution

Having read Radical Evolution, Prologue, 3-13, I hold that the prologue part would like to explain to the audience what this book is about. To put it more specifically, this book aims to let the general audience know about the vast changes that are reshaping ourselves, our children and our relationships. Based on this, a fair knowledge can be obtained that the vast changes caused by radical evolution really play an important role in reshaping generations and generations as well as the interpersonal relationships at the same time. People have to adjust themselves in order to fit well into the vast changes that appear as time goes by and the advances of the technology.

And then this prologue mentions that “we live in a remarkable times” and it is hard for us to discuss this sort of change. As for me, I really agree with this idea because the world is actually a fast changing one and it is difficult to predict what may happen next. As long as we have a look at our surroundings at present and those in the past few years, we can readily detect that great changes have happened around us. As a matter of fact, things will directly become different when compared with those in the last minute or even in the last second. Just as what has appeared in the film Forrest Gump that “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get”, which specifies such fact as well. In this sense, it is better for each and every one in today’s society to prepare themselves well enough in order to welcome the coming of those changes in the due time.

Later on, the author mentions that most people don’t care about gee-whiz technology but instead they care about what it means to be human, what it means to have relationships, what it means to live life, to have lovers, or to tell lies, through which the author puts forward that the gee-whiz technology can be seen as a window to gaze upon human nature. And then the author continues to refer to four kinds of technology, abbreviated as the GRIN technology, which is made up by the genetic, robotic, information and nano processes. These four types of technology all exert an impact in creating a curve of change that has never been seen by human kinds and the joint efforts of all those four kinds of technology are bound to bring great changes on humans. Or maybe it can be put in another way that the advances in technology has helped shaped enhanced people. As for me, the rationale why the advances in technology can contribute to the nurturing of the enhanced people lies in that better conditions can be provided in order for better personal development. As a result, all the people can develop as they like as long as they have the interest to develop.

But what is a pity to say is that the advances in technology also resulted in keenest competition among the wide public and the competition can occur in various fields, including sports, military as well as other fields like that. According to this, it is not hard to find that people have to equip themselves with extraordinary skills in order that they can keep an upper hand in a certain aspect when compared with others. The keenest competition can well indicate that those people that don’t improve themselves are bound to fail in the competition and they may have no choice but to be placed at the bottom level in the society. After all, the society is cruel and all the people have to strive for their own future if they would like to survive in the fierce competition within the society. In this sense, there is no doubt that the effect of the ideas delivered in the prologue part might have on society in the future is that the society may become a fast-paced one and people may live under pressure in the long run. Under this circumstance, the Darwin’s “survival of the fittest” actually applies to this situation quite appropriately because only those people that can win in the competition are able to survive in the society and they have to keep competing all the time. Besides, the culture of always fighting for the best may be formed in the society.

And when it comes to the question how people and the world are changing as a result of advances in science and technology, what is a must to mention is that people have to learn how to adapt to the radical evolution on their own. Just take the three hypotheses into account, there is no doubt that how people should adjust themselves to the changes have to be considered. The aforementioned three hypotheses are respectively “We are riding a curve of exponential change”, “This change is unprecedented in human history” and “It is transforming no less than human nature”, which happen as a result of the radical revolution.

Last but not the least, I would like to raise some questions concerning the reading. The first question that I would like to ask is how to better coordinate the relationship between the radical revolution and people’s life in the society. It is hard for people to live under high pressure and they may be unable to stand in the long term. And the second one is that whether it is suitable to keep developing without taking any regard of the burdens of people within the society. Or maybe the question can be put in another way that whether the evolution is too radical that it has surpassed the scope which people could withdraw.

To sum up, this book is absolutely one that is worthy of exploring by the audience if one would like to know more about human nature and the role the gee-whiz technology plays in human nature. In the meantime, this book can give some insightful suggestions as for how people can act in the times of radical revolution.
