Station Eleven is a novel by Canadian writer Emily St John Mandel. Published in 2015, this award winning and well-received novel tells the story about the decline of civilization due to the outbreak of the Georgia Flu. After 20 years of the outbreak, most of the people on earth have died. A traveling group of theater performers brings the survivors in various locations with music and Shakespeare. At St. Deborah by the Water, a conflict with the crazy prophet drives the group apart. In the end of the story, they meet at Station Eleven, which is a symbol for the remnants of human civilization. Through the depiction of the post-pandemic world, what the author is trying to tell the readers is actually about the value of human nature. In this essay, the values of happiness (satisfaction of desires), aspiration and dependence on art, as well as the continuous pursuit for love will be discussed.

The post-pandemic world seems to be a much more purified and simplified one than the current world. As the actors perform for the audience in the post-pandemic world, they are surprised to find that the audience prefer Shakespeare plays to other alternatives. According to Dieter, “People want what was best about the world (Mandel 32).” This shows that in a world with limited supply of everything, people tend to become better aware of what they truly need. Simplicity, old-fashion, and traditionalism become the main features of the post-pandemic civilization. In a way, people’s complex desires in the old world have been purified and simplified, making themselves much easier to be happy and satisfied with life.

The phrase “because survival is insufficient (Mandel 82)” refers to the spiritual needs of human beings no matter what the conditions are. It is originally adapted from Star Trek, and becomes the tattoo of Kirsten. In Station Eleven, the most direct reflection of this phrase is art serving as the salvation of the soul. The performers and actors have traveled despite the tremendous difficulties, but for what? People would still survive without seeing King Lear or Macbeth. In fact, the heart’s desire cannot be measured with materials alone. The post-pandemic world is suffering from horrible losses and lack of security. It is thus art that can comfort people’s mind.

Kirsten has always been the heart and soul of the actors’ group, emphasizing the author’s belief in humanity. For Kirsten, life is also more than just survival. It is about the memories of her loved ones, of Arthur, of comics, of airplanes, and of the old world. These memories generate her hope for the future. The path of life for Kirsten have been very rough. Being on a TV commercial at the age of three, experiencing the deaths of her brother and Arthur, whom she is very close to, these experiences are what shapes the characteristics of Kirsten to be drastically different from a typical heroine, with the qualities of independence, kindness, and toughness. Despite the tough exterior, the central theme of Kirsten is still about love, as commented by the author herself: “Hell is the absence of the people you long for (Mandel 98).”
