The Jacket In the essay "The Jacket" by Gary Soto, the author is trying to illustrate what a son would do for his family. There are many examples throughout the essay that prove this point. In the story there was a young boy who had asked his mother for a leather jacket, because he wanted to fit in with the other kids. His mom had gotten him a green jacket that was too big for him. Although he didn't like it, he still dealt with it. He had to wear it for three years.
