The Nature Of U.s. Expansion In The Late 19th Century The nature of U.S. expansion in the late 19th Century was gaining new markets around the world. The U.S. in the late 1800s had a vast amount of land for expansion, but they faced the issued of finding new markets in which they could export their plentiful supply of oil and crops. With this, interests in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Cuba were brought up. In the 1870s the U.S. gained new rights to coaling stations and trade along the Persian Gulf in Africa through Commodore Robert Shufeldt’s pioneer voyage. This expedition was in search of trading routes rather than gaining land because the U.S. was more interested in new markets all around the globe. The construction of a Pan-American Highway system was negotiated by Secretary of State James G. Blaine in 1889. This new canal now connected the United States and South America. Along with the canal negotiations, Blaine was also able to pilot Congress on passing the Reciprocity Tariff Legislation, which allowed certain Latin American goods to pass freely into the United States in terms that the United States had the same rights. This legislation immediately boomed trade with Cuba and Brazil. united, states, new, markets, expansion, cuba, latin, nation, interested, desire, because, america, trade, territory, rights, late, land, goods, being, asia, american, africa, war, wanted, through, stopped, state, spain, south, secretary, search, revolution, revenge, resources, rather
