The Great Depression According To Studs Terkel The Great Depression The Great Depression was a time of sorrow and struggle for many people. History texts books give information on historical events and other happening of this time, but until reading an oral history of The Great Depression it is hard to fully understand the strife that many went through at that time. Hard times is an excellent compilation of interviews giving detailed description about how the farmers, the business owners, and soldiers along with many other Americans were affected by the crash in our stock market. This book also adds an element to learning about history that cannot be found in textbooks. It offers the feelings of those experiencing the depression and a better understanding of personal perspective on the president and how well he served his country. An interview with sixty-three year old Jim Sheridan gives a first hand account of what it was like being part of the Bonus Army. Sheridan himself was never drafted to be in the army.
