The US unemployment rate had increased partly due to mechanization and the emergence of advanced technologies to replace human labor. In terms of economics, machines and human labor can be viewed as substitute products, increasing the use of one product will cause the decrease of demand for the other. For example, even in as early as 1990, robots have started to replace human beings and in the US, 100,000 jobs had been lost according to the Upjohn Institute for Employment Research. More recently, Ford believed that 75% of the people will be unemployed due to automation. Machines replaced human beings due to the fact that they are more productive, has a higher quality, and that they can do repetitive and boring work for a long time without feeling tired. However, according to Mabry and Sharplin (1986), I argue here that in the short term, unemployment will be increased while in the long term, unemployment will be decreased. Also, according to Mincer and Danninger (2000), low-skilled workers will see more unemployment while the employment for high-skill workers will increase.

First, in the short term, as machines have many comparative advantages than human beings, many in works in traditional industries such as agriculture will be threatened because they might lose their job, especially those with low skill sets. Machines can replace them to do works that requires strength and physical works. However, for high skill workers, such as the manager in an agricultural firm, his position will not be substituted with machines because machines cannot make managerial decisions for a firm at this stage. In the short term, there might be structural unemployment because the workers skills do not fit with the new automations and more education is needed for them to be employed again.

Second, in the long term, structural unemployment will be ameliorated because many those low skill workers will have enhanced their knowledge and skill set through more education so that they become high skill workers. Automation does not destroy employment altogether because there will still be people needed to either develop new machines, write codes for new programmes, or supervises and work for the maintenance of those machines. With more education, when your skill is suitable for those kinds of positions, then the worker can become employed again. In fact, in the long run, because we have learned in economics that people’s demand is unlimited, we will always look for more new and advanced technology to satisfy our needs. As long as there is the demand for more technology, people will do all they can to create and innovate. This process will also provide job opportunities for those with the appropriate skill sets.

In short, with more automation, I believe that in the short run, there will be more structural unemployment that can be less severe in the long run. Low skilled workers will see more unemployment while those with high skills will not be affected so much.
