There are two reasons that I take his course. Firstly, the present American society has its root in the past. Only by reading and learning American history, I can have a better understanding of the current issues of the American society. I am interested most in the American Civil War. It is perhaps one of largest wars of the North American war history. My interest began with the movies about civil war: Gone with the Wind and 12 years a slave. There is the huge conflict between the southerners and the Northerner due to conflict between Southern plantation economy and capitalist economy in northern part of the country. I think the northern part of the country represents justices as I believed that all men are equal and the black people deserve respect.

This delicate relationship between the law enforcement and the rights of citizens is highlighted during 1960s and 1970s when the counter culture activities happened. Later, relevant law has been issued to protect the privacy and freedom of the community and political groups. Therefore, the police should pay attention to the needs of the citizens and the community.

1. I am rather agree about your reason for taking this course. You mentioned the link between the American government and American history. I think it is quite reasonable as every decision of American government were made in some historical context.. And the decision made by former politicians, although they were already history, their decision will influence the decision-making of the leaders of today. For instance, there is in general a strong trace of heritage of foreign polices made during the cold war by the then Americans presidents, such as Truman, Reagan and Johnson. As for the reasons for good feelings about history, you made a good point: history provides us and the future a guideline.
