The novel Atonement is one of the most famous works which is relevant to personal atonement as well as personal confession. In the story, the lives of three people are involved. In the story, Briony is considered to be the girl who started all the miserable events in the life of the man that she loves and her own beloved sister. In fact, I think among these three people, Briony’s life was the most miserable one. In fact, she fell in love with the man Robbie and dreamed to be his lover. However, her Robbie rarely paid attention to her. On the contrary, he was obsessed with the sister of Briony, Cecilia. The most depressing experience for a teenage girl is no more than falling in love with a man who does not pay attention to her. In fact, when she decided to accuse her beloved Robbie to be the maniac, it was the moment when she put herself in the hell because both her sister and the man she loved treated her like the enemy.

Although a lot of people think the Cecilia has the most miserable life because she was separated from her lover. For me, I believe that she is luckier than her sister Briony because although her sister could not spend time with her lover, at least she has gained the heart and affection of Robbie. For Briony, I think she acts like the bitter widow who dies alone.

In fact, I believe that what is most torturing and heart wrenching for Briony is not about failing to gain the affection of Robbie. On the contrary, her life was ruined by her guilt and the crimes she committed. What is worse, for decades, since she was a young teenager to an elderly woman, inside her heart, she could not forgive herself for committing such a crime, which ended up putting the man she loved in prison. Also, even though she once considered turning herself in to save Robbie, she did not have the courage to do so.

In fact, there is a famous saying which teaches people that the worst thing about committing crime is not about being caught by the police of being put in prison. On the contrary, if a criminal has conscience, which the majority of them had, the guilt that is eating them up is the worst torture. People once asked questions about whether it is morally right to cheat on one’s partner. However, this question does not have a specific answer because what is most torturing thing is that some people could not forgive themselves and the guilt ate them up.

For Briony, she spent her entire life wondering whether she needed to go to the judge to confess her crimes, in hope of helping her sister as well as Robbie to get back together. However, she never had the courage to do so, even until the death of Robbie, she never got the chance to apologize in person to her sister.

To conclude, I believe that compared to the lives of Bobbie and Cecilia, Briony’s life was most miserable. Firstly, she died alone without gaining the affection of her beloved one. In addition, she committed the worst crime which ended up shipping Robbie to prison and causing her to lose her sister. However, most importantly, in her whole life, she never felt blessed or calm. On the contrary, every day she was tortured by her guilt and she got stuck in the dilemma of whether she should go to the court to right her wrong but she never had the courage to bring back peace for herself.
