Every time you go out and order a drink or some sort of food, do you ever stop and think about what might be in it? For most people, the answer would be no; we put our trust in the supplier to give us good food. In the world of drug users they have this same mindset. This mindset in today's world is very dangerous. One drug that is sometimes hidden in products is Benzylpiperazine, better known as BZP. BZP is used by people to add an extra boost to their mood, or the effects of other drugs. It wasn't always this way, how could something as harmless as an anti-parasitic medicine cause so much trouble?

BZP is composed of C11H16N2 (figure 1), and was originally created to be used as a potential antihelminthic(anti-parasitic) agent for use in farm animals. Over time of it being tested they chose to release it to the public. It was soon discovered that BZP has side effects and was largely abandoned as a worm treatment. The next time that it came up in literature, was in the 1970's, when it was investigated as a potential antidepressant medicine. They had put it under extensive testing; however, they soon came to the same results as with the animal use. They had found out that it needed to be rejected when the research they did showed that BZP had amphetamine-like effects and was liable to abuse.

During the early 1990's, the DEA(Drug Enforcement Administration) saw an uprising of the drug being used recreationally in California. The DEA immediately launched an investigation. It was discovered that BZP was being used as an adulterant (adding a hidden substance to a consumable product/poison) in illicit(illegal) drugs. Since at this time BZP hadn't gained the recognition with law makers, and was not yet illegal, the drug gained popularity with late-night party goers as a replacement for illegal drugs. The drug could be taken orally, or intravenously.

The drug effects are very similar to an amphetamine. It attacks the serotonin reputake transporter, which is the cell like membrane that contains the nerve cells inside of a cell. Serotonin is the chemical in our bodies that regulates things like mood, appetite, sleep, muscle contraction, and cognitive functions such as memory and learning.[1] The effects cause your muscles to relax and to have a floating type feeling while high. 50mg of BZP must be ingested before a high can be achieved, but no more than 200mg can be in the system, or it may have fatal effects.

The drug has an interesting side-effect that most drugs don't posses. The drug actually creates effects very similar to a hangover. Some manufacturers created a “recovery pill” that contained 5-HTP, a type of natural occurring amino acid, and a blend of vitamins. This pill was an attempt to not let the mild to severe hangovers push people away from the drug. This practice was heaviest with the manufacturers and distributors of BZP in New Zealand.

The drug became illegal in the US in 2002, after a report was filed by a DEA agent saying that the effects of BZP were 10 to 20 times more potent than an amphetamine. In reality, the effects are about 10 times less potent than those of an amphetamine. Soon after, many countries, such as the UK, Greece, Italy, Ireland, Denmark, and Sweden, chose to follow and make the drug illegal. The drug remained legal in Canada and New Zealand. The legality of the drug was brought into question when it was noticed that serious side effects occurred when someone ingested an ecstasy pill that had been laced with BZP.

Soon after the drug was made illegal, some small specialty stores began to sell BZP, labeling it as a dietary supplement. When the city health department would question the stores, they would again try to get around the law by stating that the product they were selling was a natural product. They said that it contained a pepper extract, and that it produced an herbal high. The reality was that it was a completely synthetic product.

The DEA launched a new investigation to try and discover whether the drug was as potent as originally stated. They wanted to run a test to compare it with users that were addicted to amphetamines. The test was first conducted with rats. They induced methamphetamine addiction in a group of rats. When addiction was reached, they began to substitute the methamphetamine with doses of BZP. The tests indicated that BZP can substitute for methamphetamines in addicted rats, although it is ten times less potent and produces much weaker addictive effects.

The DEA concluded by releasing a report, laying out the results of the tests. They also included a statement saying that although the test produced evidence to the less potent effects of the drug, the drug still had a chance of producing addiction. It went on to release information that showed that users of BZP would rarely use the drug alone, but used it in a combination with other drugs, in an attempt to heighten the euphoric effects of the other drug. In fact, in a survey conducted with known users of BZP, they say it is quite easy to stop, but they did not want to, and continue to use the drug, feeling that it helps them to reach higher levels of mood, sociability, and energy.

I believe that even though the drug is 10 times less potent then a normal amphetamine, it is still a drug that alters your judgment. In my opinion, any substance that can put your life or someone else's life in danger should be illegal. The drug has been proven to have subtle addictive effects, and has also been proven to have the ability to be a “gateway drug”. This just means that since the drug may not satisfy the needs of the user on its own, they begin to experiment with other drugs. When the experimentation leaves something to be desired, they will begin to use drugs in combination, leading to potentially deadlier effects.

Since the drug also had a history of being used as an adulterant, having the drug become legal might open the doors to it being used for that purpose again. And if that were to happen, people would be at risk for becoming addicted to the drug, or have their lives put at risk for a fatal dose being hidden in their food or drinks.

People find interesting ways to achieve their goal of getting those few hours of complete euphoria. All that they set their mind to is that amazing feeling that will be setting in, instead of knowing the deadly history of the drug. The pill used to add that little extra boost to their late night partying was once used as a way to poison people. But why cause such a legal battle of this drug? Is it really worth fighting for something that could one day affect the lives of your children? Jimmy Greaves once said, “As parents, you expect your children to outlive you and when that doesn't happen, you become an empty shell.” Ask yourself, is it really worth loosing our children to this drug?
