The meaning of music has two aspects: the meanings of music itself and the meanings of the relationship between music and the related things. From the perspective of information theory, music is like text message using sounds as carrier. The meanings of music itself include apparent information, structural information and inside information. The apparent information is provided by the sound characteristic of music which is different from the unmusical sounds. The information on music’s appearance contains national character, historicity or temporal spirit. From the view of John Blacking different nations have different definitions, conceptions, text versions, histories, applications and related behaviors, and the demarcation line between music and non-music is also not alike, thus, music in different cultures have different external features and provide different apparent information, and some forms are only understood by the persons inside the culture circle.
Except for the apparent information, music also has structural information. The structural information is the identifiable information expressed by the musical form which is the way to comprehend the internal information of music. Content is showed by form, and form is always correspond to content. The form of music has two aspects: material and contexture which are direct objects of aesthetic appreciation. The structure is the most important agent of musical form and the most important provider of the structural information. When people learn the form of music, except analyzing the musical structure, people should also take nation, society, history, culture and aesthetic custom into consideration, because music are generated in different cultures and different times. Music also includes internal information. The internal information refers to the self-contained content of music which can be achieved through music itself. However, the form of music includes the content closely related to human from the beginning, so the internal information refers to the aspects of nature and society. The natural aspect relates to the rhythm of natural auditory perception. The social aspect is about the rhythm of learned auditory perception.
At last, linked information, directional content, intention of musician and cultural significance, is the meaning produced by the connection of music with others. Most musician want to express their feelings through music which cannot be contained or presented directly by musical form, so theme music and accidental structure are created to make implicational content presented pointedly. Some musicians’ intention even cannot be expressed through either music itself or theme, under this circumstance music often have overtones. Besides, music is the product of society. Therefore, the cultural significance of music is produced by the combination of music and other cultural things.
