The foyer of Space.Com, housed at the Jo’burg Theatre is packed with people waiting anxiously to see what the second Current State of Poetry has in store for them. Enthusiasts enter the space and fill it up in an instant. The stage setting is of a typical alley in an American movie scene of the Projects: spray paint, cracked walls and darkness. Vus’umuzi Phakathi opens the open slam with a resplendent rendition of Lil'Hussil that some may call an alter Ego.

The judges are received through a brief introduction made up merely of their names and a sentence creative enough to be a line to a beautiful poem. These here judges are a perfect play on Idols first round auditions. Jefferson Tshabalala poses strongly as the Randal Abrahams of the poetry industry; his job is to never be generous with giving scores. The 12 slammers are welcomed through a grand entrance and wild applause. They have been prepared for the slam as well as carefully picked through a workshop that grooms the poets early in the morning before the open slam begins. The point behind the workshops is to equip the slammers with performance techniques and stage presence as well as rules to the slam. Surely this is one of the only poetry competitions that I have ever attended that hands you free knowledge to take home.

The first round offers a minute for each poet to share a prepared poem of their choice. The entrance into the second round is opened by a scary elimination option for three poets who feel that their first performance wasn’t all that good. If they feel that they underperformed they can volunteer their exit by taking their chairs and humbly walking off the stage. Welcome to democracy as none of the slammers saw their performance unworthy of an entrance into the second round so all the poets sit firmly on their current thrones. But Lil Hustle has a lot of strings up his sleeves. The poets are told to stand and face away from the audience and from the left and right ends, a poet stands from the line to pick out eight out of the 11 poets whom they feel deserve to go into the second round, each poet passionately voted for themselves but like any other democratic vote, the candidate with the most votes stays in the running while the three with least votes joins the rest of the audience.

From the beginning of the slam there were poets who stood out and showed the most potential to make if further in the slam. Kano Shoro was amongst these outstanding poets and right after an enticing poem capturing a bitter and psychologically twisted person who also comes out as a calm version of a bipolar patient with an opening line like, "you forget that you are edible", sending the audience into a frenzy. Kano receives a 6 from the Randal of the CSP Open Slam, which is a first and definitely means that she has left a mark. The heat has taken an intense rise and if you could listen carefully you could hear the room sweating.

As an additional gift from the CSP Slam team we receive a three minute piece of improvisation between Rifiloe who is an actress, and one of the runner ups from the previous slam, namely No Life Cords. The concept of the improvisation was provided by an audience member: “Consider Kush”. The brief piece of improv was to be a freestyle poem from No Life and an acting scene from Refiloe which turned into an intriguing work of art which culminated in a wild standing ovation from the audience.

For the final round, two women remain and go head to head in a somewhat collaborative freestyle under a concept received from somewhere in the audience and a young lady from the audience sends out freestyle words which they continue to rip apart and show us what free styling looks like. At the end of it all Kano Shoro, takes the title as CSP Slam Champion for February.

ONE ON ONE SLAM
The one on one CSP SLAM opens with yet another introduction of Lil Hustle, the lad behind the man who is Vus’umuzi Phakathi. He walks onto stage and basically brings comedy to poetry, to theatre and to slamming. On the far ends of the stage sits the two slammers whom have been long anticipated. Beside them sits a lady each of whom seem like they are the muses behind the two contestants and of course both of them believe that their man is the one that deserves to take the cup.

The ladies go head to head in an awkwardly comic stare down and the audience receives this act in excitement. The introduction of the two men also involved having their supporters showing off to the opposing team that they stand firmly by their partner. It is hot in the theatre that is overly packed with poets from all over the place, even those we have never seen or heard of before. This is no ordinary slam, let alone poetry session; it is one of a kind. A very high sense of theatre would pop up every now and then. The contestants, Zewande BK from the Johannesburg Team and Ingonyama from the Durban Team were hyped and ready for the challenge. This slam had the feel of a boxing match as the poet muses would dab their poets with towels and give them a drink of water, and they would even fix their attire a bit every now and then.

Round six is a three minute round, known as the special round. It is the round we have all been waiting for. The two slammers have the upcoming one on one slammers drop words randomly for the current slammers to freestyle. Words are shouted out by the two chosen ones and the two slammers see that they have no choice but to improvise together. Throughout the round they stand close together and use their bodies as props too to improvise. The freestyle brings the two contestants close and they are suddenly working together.

At the end of the round the judges make their final choices and the title goes to Zewande Bhengu, everyone is happy with the decision and a standing ovation is due for both the slammers as the shake hands, hug and bow together, it has been an amazing show.

Going home is a hesitant struggle. The CSP One on One slam is an extraordinary show that does not offer you an envelope of a few hundred of rand and local crafts, but they offer real life opportunities with the overall winner getting a chance to compete at an international slam in LA, United States of America. This slam is like long awaited rain in a drought stricken land. It is to the South African poetry Industry what the World Cup is to the world of soccer. No poor organizing was visible, the show ended on time. It was a show you would sit through, not because you paid money for it, but because it makes one forget that there is an ordinary world just outside the door. A show like this, one that keeps you entertained throughout with endless surprises needs to see to it that they maintain their standards, and not stagnate. Surely, WordNSound has found a new and booming competitor in the world poetry events, a little challenge here and there is always better than none. The industry has now received even greater variety. CSP SLAM March 2016, we await your arrival eagerly.
