Genji Characters Lady Akashi Akashi, Lady of Daughter of a former provincial governor turned priest, she becomes one of Genji's secondary wives. Her daughter is adopted by Murasaki and eventually becomes empress. Akikonomu Akikonomu (ah-kee-koh-noh-moo) She is the daughter of Prince Zembo and the Lady of Rokujo. She serves as high priestess of the Ise shrine and later as the principal wife and empress of the Reizei emperor. Aoi Aoi is Genji's first and official wife. She is the daughter of the first Minister of the Left and sister to To no Chujo. She is one of the few women in the tale that seems to be immune to Genji's charms. Aoi is described as very proper. So much so, that after her death, Genji wonders "how for all these years he could have seen in her any flaw" (Aoi, 11) She gives birth to Genji's son Yugiri, who seems to have inherited her studious nature (but Genji's cursed lecherousness). Her death is attributed to Rokujo's spirit. This followed from Rokujo's carriage getting pushed to the rear at a procession with Genji as the main attraction.
