Marius Pontemercy courted Cosette from afar, and won her affections with a love letter. Marius crafted his persona with words, representing and embodying himself in a letter, and he gave this letter to the woman he loved, in the hopes that she would see the depth and sincerity of his love. In Marius¡¯s love poem to Cosette, he compared her to a shining star. The next evening, they both declared their love as "disembodied spirits," even forgetting at first to tell each other their names. Hugo gave away his views on certain subjects in his writing.
