Everybody Knows: Cynicism in America
William Chaloupka in his book, Everybody Knows, Cynicism in America, explores the cause, effect and need for cynicism in the American political arena. He educates the reader on the history of cynicism and the role it plays in todays society by dividing the book into three areas. Part one allows the reader to look at the history of cynicism while, part two elaborates on the evolution of cynicism and the effect on life today, and, in part three, explains the role of cynicism and its importance in Americas politics. The idea of doubting the messenger has historical ties going back as far as when man began living in communities. For example, Thomas, known as the doubting apostle, questions Jesus image after his resurrection. Early in his book, Chaloupka states that such cynicism is a cultural strain (page xv). This view draws the reader a picture of yeast brewing and growing, and, if left unchecked could expand without limit. Cynicism can feed on itself, perpetuating many misconceptions that can aid or hurt the society as a whole.
