At the threshold of the article, the author discussed the case of Manville Corporation, introducing the question of how to create prosperity through business. He further explained the essence of prosperity, and pointed out the fact that the size of prosperity has been narrowed in the contemporary world. He argued strongly that our vision of prosperity should be enlarged. To further illustrate the broad meaning of prosperity, the author cited several examples, say, the industrialization occurred in China. Step by step, the author expanded the concept of prosperity beyond that of an individual doing well.

Not surprisingly, this expanded definition of prosperity has a wider implication for business. Firstly, leaders of firms must deal meticulously with the conflicts between social, economical and environmental prosperity. To some extent, they have to prioritize one over the other. Furthermore, they are expected to pursue prosperity in the threefold sense with a conscience, and more significantly, to play their crucial part in tackling the problems facing the world. it is unquestionably demanding for firms to achieve three types of sustainable prosperity. In order to achieve economic prosperity, enterprises need not merely to keep a state of growth and full employment, but to build two concepts: good enough returns and long-term value. Leaders of firms should bear in mind that what they should do is to balance the risk and return instead of trying to maximize the profits. Social prosperity can be said to be achieved only when the society can benefit from the existence of a company. in particular, the company need to provide people with meaningful employment and better quality of life. With respect of environmental prosperity, a company should do the business in an environmental-friendly manner.
This expanded definition of prosperity enlightens me on my own understanding of life and success. As a member of the society, we should assume the social responsibility no matter whether we are business leaders or not. Even for the sake of our generations, we still have to work laboriously to achieve the sustainable prosperity, economically, socially and environmentally.-M
