Question 1:
Solar energy refers to energy using devices such as photovoltaics to directly convert light energy into electric energy, which is clean and definitely emission-free.
Hydroelectricity refers to electricity that is generated by hydropower using the gravitational force of fierce falling water driving a water turbine and generator to produce electrical power.
Wind energy is the energy converted from a large amount of air flow on earth surface using wind turbines. Wind power is clean, renewable and produces no greenhouse gas emissions during operation
Nuclear energy refers to energy required to split a nucleus of an atom. Usually using a nuclear power plant in which the heat source is a nuclear reactor and the heat is utilized to generate steam which drives a steam turbine connected to an electric generator to produce electricity
As far as my hometown Beijing, where the air pollution is severe and usually surrounded by poisonous haze, to date, the main energy source is natural gas and there will be no coal used so as to improve the air condition. Based on the report published by Beijing electric power corporation, the electricity will be 100% generated from clean energy(basically natural gas)and several coal-fired power plants will be forced to close which means that there will be no coal used by 2014. Besides, a large quantity of charging pile will be constructed all around Beijing city in 2014 and by then the main power consumed by vehicles will gradually change from petroleum to electricity which will definitely drastically reduce the pollutant emission, hence the clean air.
Question 3
Major energy sources and percent of share of total China electricity generation in 2014:
Coal and Natural gas = 65.4%
Nuclear = 1.5%
Hydropower = 23%
Solar = 2.3%
Wind = 7%
Major energy sources and percent of share of total U.S. electricity generation in 2014:
Coal = 39%
Natural gas = 27%
Nuclear = 19%
Hydropower = 6%
Other renewables = 7%
Biomass = 1.7%
Geothermal = 0.4%
Solar = 0.4%
Wind = 4.4%
Petroleum = 1%
Other gases <1%
It is indicated from the data that traditional energy source coal and natural gas still play an important role in China, making up 65.4% of total China electricity generation in 2014. Apart from coal and natural gas, hydropower accounts for 27% which also plays an essential role in the electricity generated. And the rest of the energy sources just make up a tiny percentage of the total electricity generated, mainly nuclear 1.5%, solar 2.3% and wind 7%. Compared with China, the coal and natural gas also make up the largest percentage of the total electricity generated, which is 66%, nearly the same as China. However, compared with the tiny percentage of nuclear in China, the nuclear in U.S. contributes 19% in the total electricity generated, which is far larger than that of China. However, the percentage of hydropower in U.S. is not as much as that in China, barely 6%. The rest of the energy sources contribute little to the total electricity generated, making up only 9% in total.
Obviously, nuclear energy, as a clean and emission free energy should be paid more attention to, since it only make up 1.5% in China, far less than that of U.S., which is 19%. Besides, the consumption of traditional fossil energy such as coal and natural gas should be reduced and be replaced, since they are not renewable. Clean energy such as solar and wind energy should be developed more and the government of China should make policies that facilitate the construction and use of solar and wind facilities.
