A Study in Scarlet is a detective mystery novel written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, which was first published in 1887. It is the first story to feature the character of Sherlock Holmes, who would later become one of the most famous literary detective characters, with long-lasting interest and appeal.

Conan Doyle was a Scottish writer and physician, most noted for his fictional stories about the detective Sherlock Holmes, which are generally considered milestones in the field of crime fiction. He was also a prolific writer whose other works include fantasy and science fiction stories, plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction and historical novels.
     onan Doyle was born on 22 May 1859. Supported by wealthy uncles, Conan Doyle received good education since childhood. By the time he left school, he had rejected religion and became an agnostic, though he would become a spiritualist mystic.
     From 1876 to 1881 he studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh Medical School. While studying, Doyle began writing short stories. After his graduation from university in 1881, he went to the West African coast as a ship’s surgeon. In 1882 he came back and joined former classmate as his partner at a medical practice in Plymouth, but their relationship proved difficult. Later, he moved to Southsea, he put more attention to his writing. 
     His first work featuring Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, A study in Scarlet, was taken by Ward Lock & Co on November 1886. Doyle's attitude towards his most famous creation was ambivalent. Doyle had Holmes and Professor Moriarty plunge to their deaths together down the Reichenbach Falls in the story "The Final Problem". Public outcry, however, led him to feature Holmes in 1901 in the novel The Hound of the Baskervilles.  
     In 1885 Doyle married Louise Hawkins. Unfortunately she suffered from tuberculosis and died in 1906. The following year he married Jean Elizabeth Leckie, whom he had first met and fallen in love with in 1897.
     Conan Doyle created many great work. To many people’ s sorrow, Conan Doyle died in 1930. However, his work had a significant impact on other writers.
     Conan Doyle is known for his work of Sherlock Holmes, but this is only one of his contribution. Unlike many other contemporary writers, Doyle’s short stories have complicated plots with a quirky twist, which attracted many readers. 
     The first part of story begins in 1881,when Dr. Watson, having returned to London from Afghanistan, runs into an old friend Stamford, who introduces Dr. Watson to Holmes. After that, Holmes and Dr. Watson shares the room at a flat at 221B Baker Street. Inspectors Gregson and Lestrade seek help from Holmes and narrate the case, Holmes invites Dr. Watson to accompany him as he investigates the crime scene, an abandoned house off the Brixton Road. Holmes observes the spot carefully and finds the ‘RACHE’ on the wall. He takes advantage of the feature on the wall and uses deduction method to speculate the basic characteristic of criminal. Later, a new victim is killed. Holmes sets the trap and he successfully catches the criminal.
     The second part of story recounts the experience when the criminal was a young man at Utah. The victim kills his father and his lover, so he becomes hostile to the victim and it also involves the Mormonsism. Afterwards, the criminal follows his enemy to London and finally he revenges for his father and lover.
     Holmes not only has brilliant ideas, acute observation and reasonable speculation, but also good in sword, boxing and playing violin. Usually he stays in Baker Street 221B. he smokes and waits for the client or does his chemical experiments. Once received the case, he would immediately become a hunter, search the evidence and finally find the truth. Holmes is expert in deduction method.
     Watson was sent to Afghanistan as a doctor, then retired due to the injury. he met Holmes and they lived together at a flat at 221B Baker Street until he get married. Watson is a good assistant of Holmes and a recorder of Holmes, he records the process of the case. Almost all the cases are recorded by Watson, however, Holmes often criticized Watson because he cares about the description instead of objective facts.
