1989 is the fifth studio album of Taylor Swift, the world known American singer-songwriter. This album, described by Taylor Swift as her “first documented official pop album”, was released on October 27, 2014 and sold 1.287 million copies during the first week of release, ranking as one of the best albums in 2014 by numerous publications including Time, Rolling Stone, etc.
Context
While Taylor rose to fame as a superstar in country music, 1989 marks a drastic departure from country pop of her previous songs. She stepped out of her usual genre, completely crossing over from the country to the mainstream. She was inspired from the Eighties synth-pop music and goes full blast, which proves that she has completed the transition from country ingénue to urban sophisticate. Taylor followed what 80s pop singers did: make a quick-change experiment after an epic. She didn’t duplicate her successful style in Red; rather, she chose a different challenge.
The title, “1989”, comes from the year when Taylor was born and the pop music in that experimental time was undergoing significant changes such as the use of synths and a drum pad.
Musical style
As mentioned before, this album is Taylor’s “first documented official pop album” and derived from the late 80s pop music. As a pop and synthpop album, 1989 focuses more on electronic production than her previous releases with only a few tracks featuring Taylor’s trademark tear-stained guitar. The production consists of drum programming, synthesizers, pulsating bass, processed backing vocals, and guitars. According to Jem Aswad of Billboard, "texture; an acoustic guitar is audible on just one song." Taylor thinks that this album is most "sonically cohesive" studio album she has ever made.
Lyrics
While the lyrics in this album still go around love and relationship, they are expressed in a new way. Taylor is less “boycentric—paying less attention to the male, and uses tremendous tropes to convey sophisticated feelings. Taylor revealed that she was inspired by her self-discovery lasting two years before the release of 1989. Aswad noted that the lyrics were more “seasoned and subtle…than in the past” with the help of Martin and other key collaborators.
Specifics
Most of the songs are limited to three minutes, while "How You Get the Girl," "This Love," "Clean" – are the three that crash past four minutes. “This Love” is the only one in this album independently created by Taylor. This single was originally a poem she wrote in 2013 according Taylor Swift.
"Shake It Off" is an uptempo pop song, totally different to her previous releases. The lyric "Haters gonna hate hate hate hate hate" has become popular among her fans.
Bottom line
This album is like nothing Taylor Swift has tried before, but it achieved great success. It received generally favorable reviews from contemporary music critics. Deeply weird, feverishly emotional, wildly enthusiastic, 1989 is a typical work of Taylor Swift.
