Exhaust Water Pollution in Tennger Desert

In 2014, Roffar Fertilizer company was disclosed to emit the unprocessed waste water into Tengger desert. The pollutants directly affected the nesting area of residents and herdsmen in Inner Mongolia area.

As a heavy pollutant emission, and high energy consumption fertilizer manufacturing company, Roffar Fertilizer is forced to conduct its manufacturing in Tennger desert which is located in the

remote area of China. Due to the lack of tight and strict supervision from local authority, Roffar Fertilizer emits its waste water directly into the reservoirs in the desert without processing.

After the natural filtration in the desert, Roffar Fertilizer moves the solid sediments to the deeper desert and buries them there. By emitting exhaust water and burying the sediments, the underground water is contaminated which results in the unsafe drinking water and irrigation water. Furthermore, the air is also heavily polluted which causes the respiration diseases among the workers and residents in this area. To facilitate the production of the fertilizer and other chemical products, Roffar Fertilizer also digs more and more deep wells to pump up underground water to sustain the manufacturing. An increasing number of wells in the Tengger desert worsens the situation of water shortage in this area. Without enough underground water, plants and livestock, even human beings are facing a challenge of acquiring usable water.

The serious water and air pollution brings negative effects to the local society which hinders the growth. The contaminated environment not only harms the natural cycle of the desert but also contributes to the worsening of the public health.

First, the natural environment is influenced by the manufacturing and emitting activities. A vicious ecosystem cycle leads to a more widespread and disastrous influence in this area. Emitting exhaust water into desert and burying waste sediments hurt the already-fragile vegetation in the desert. At the same time, pumping underground water to facilitate the manufacturing activities leads to a severe shortage of water in this area overall. Local residents are not able to acquire enough safe drinking water, as well as the herds. Meanwhile, the plants in the desert can not be irrigated, which leads them to die or to soil erosion. The contaminated environment also drives away the natural beauty of Tengger desert, tourists would be reluctant to visit this place which is also a huge profit loss to this area. To judge this issue from the long-term perspective, less and less revenue could be generated from this area.

Second, from the perspective of public health, pollution also raises a widespread concern over the healthcare. Residents in this area are forced to breathe in the polluted air and drink the contaminated water. Through this, people can easily acquire respiratory dysfunctional problems or other pollution-related diseases. In the short-term, the government and the family will shoulder the heavy burden of expensive medical care. In the long-term, a shortage of labor force in Tengger desert could be predicted. And due to the overall health deteriorating, the government and the society are forced to carry  heavy financial and social burden of taking care the affected population.

Due to the complexity of pollution itself, it is impossible to quantify the exact cost of the environment deterioration. However, it still leaves deep  marks in the  society.
First, the affected population is more vulnerable to diseases, which increases the medical cost of the family and the society as well. If this group of labor force is sick or dies, a loss of workforce can not be avoided which finally contributes to the slow and inefficient development of the society.

Second, desert is a fragile area which can be easily damaged by natural or unnatural changes. If Tennger desert is heavily damaged, it is almost impossible to recover the ecosystem in this area.

This land will become a dead area, which pushes away visitors and also investors.

In a nutshell, Tennger desert pollution not only hurts the development of the company itself, but also harms the livelihood in this area as well. As a matter of fact, it is a no-win situation.
