这是一篇演讲稿,介绍了著名画家 Marc Chagall的人生故事,并讨论他的兴趣特征之一。这就是他热情与基督教和使用大量的基督教模式在他的艺术作品,然而,他是一个犹太人。

Hello everybody, today I am going to talk about a famous painter which name is Marc Chagall. In my speech, I will introduce his master pieces to you guys and discuss one of his interest characteristics. That is he was enthusiastic with Christianity and use a lot of Christian patterns in his art works, nevertheless, he was a Jew.

First, I would like to give you an introduction about him.
Marc Chagall was a Russian-Jewish painter and was born in Vitebsk, Byelorussia in a poor Jewish family. Byelorussia is now in the north of Russian. He was born in 1887 and died in 1985.
When he was young, he show his interest in art and his mother was a big supporter of him. So that he began to learn paint. I remember the story that he was so talented so that after a few mouth he has learned a lot about paint and began to dissatisfy with his teacher and went to Paris. As we all now, Paris has been famous for its art atmosphere and artist for hundred years. This story can show that he was a natural born arts and pursued his dream positively.
What is more, when he was a child, he learned a serious of fantastic Russian and Jewish folk stories which gave him ability of a magical imagination and accumulated numerous materials for him to create his pictures. Also, it made him have a deep understand of Jewish religious traditions.

Second, I will show you some of his master pieces. In brief, as we know, he is the representative of surrealism in the modern history of paintings. Therefore, his pictures contains the characteristic of Impressionism,Abstractionism,Cubism and many other art schools.
In Paris, he created his most famous picture I and the Village in 1911.This picture has many soft, dreamlike images overlapping one another in a continuous space. In the right of the work, a green-faced man stares at a goat. In the left, we can see a head of grey house. And below the man and the horse, there are an upside-down female violinist and a black-clothed man holding a scythe. In the ground, there is a glowing tree held in the man's dark hand.
We can notice that the green-faced man wears a necklace with St. Andrew's cross, which indicates that the man is a Christian and there is a small Orthodox church under the horse. Orthodox is a popular religion in the north of Far East. So we can find that I and the Village is influenced by memories of the Marc Chagall, related to his place of birth and his relationship to it.
And another famous art work of him, Red Horse drew from 1938 to 1944. In this pictures, he used the comparison of colors, such as red, blue, green and so on to form a horrible atmosphere as we were in a war. Also, this picture is consist of many soft, dreamlike images overlapping one another in a continuous space. I have to mention that the world war two was in the peak at that time and gave Chagall deep and terrible impressions.

Third, I have some personal opinions about the conflicts that as a Jew, Chagall also paint many Christian materials in his work. I note 2 point to show this interesting phenomenon. For one thing, the man in I and the Village wears a necklace with St. Andrew's cross which indicates Marc Chagall has some acknowledge about Christianity. For another, from 1957, he make a contribution to the the window of Cathedral of Reims which definitely a Christian church. It can’t be ignored that he pictured many Christian stories on the windows.
In my opinions, as the Christianity came from Judaism, they must have something the same and similar, such as the Bible. We can identify many story in The Old Testament and The New Testament portrayed in the windows of the church. Additionally, as influenced by the Second World War, Chagall was forced to travel in many places so that he absorbed different kinds of schools of arts and those experiences may make him adopted a more open and inclusive mind to the creation of art works.
That is all, thank you for listening.

   I and the village
