The Analysis of The Maltese Falcon

I recently watched a movie named The Maltese Falcon. It was adapted from a book with the same named written by Dashiell Hammett. The Maltese Falcon is a detective story, with protagonist named Spade and main characters including Brigid, Gutman and Cairo. Brigid fabricated a story to ask Spade for help. And then Murders of Miles Archer and Thursby formed the beginning of the story. Miles Archer was Spade’s partner and Thursby was Brigid’s follower. After asking Brigid for several times, Spade realized that they, including Gutman and Cairo, were looking for an invaluable falcon statue, which was the main clue of the story. Spade decided to help them find out where the falcon was. When searching, he found out it was Brigid who killed Miles Archer. Finally, he found out the falcon. However, after discovering that the falcon was fake, he sent Brigid to police, though he was wondering whether he had fallen in love with Brigid.

Why I love this movie should be attributed to its twisted plots which tightly attract audience and arouse their emotional responses. The movie reaches this effect mainly through creating unexpected changes in plots.The highlight of the story lies in the unpredictable character of the protagonist. It is really difficult for audience to guess what kind of person Spade actually is. At the beginning, he seemed to be intelligent and justice. However, later he seemed to be attracted by the invaluable treasure of the falcon and forgot the death of his partner, which did disappoint audience. However, at the final and climax scene, Brigid was sent to police by him, which was totally out of expectation and once again shocked audience. It is these unexpected results that makes the story charming and gives audience more place to think about the quality of the protagonist. 
Hope that I can have more chance to get in touch with such films.
