I choose the article 5 Ways to Kick-Start Your Business Planning, written on August 26 of 2010 by Tim Berry, who is the “Business Plans” coach at Enterpreneur.com and president of Palo Alto Software Inc. The article gives pretty useful and pertinent suggestions on business planning. It tells relevant readers five quick and easy ways to begin business planning from now on: doing a SWOT analysis, comparing plans to actual sales, talking to 10 well-chosen people, imagining a customer story and visualizing a better future. All the ways presented by the article are so effective and useful that they can kill people’s setbacks and point out a clear road for the relevant people.
The article 5 Ways to Kick-Start Your Business Planning reminds me of the challenges of starting a business learned in chapter two of class topics before. I have learnt a lot in this chapter, which mainly talks about the business planning, the role of accounting in business, sources and uses of cash, etc. To start a business well, business planning plays an important role, while many people ignore this point or fail to do well business planning at the beginning of the business. This article, however, not only gives me a deeper thought and reflection on the business planning learnt from my class, but also indicates relevant people a clear and quick path to do business planning well.Meanwhile, the article gives me meaningful implications for business. From the article, I understand that to start a business, people should know who they are first, who they are serving and what they want, that is what their dreams are. All these implications belong to parts of business planning. I will try to explain these implications specifically and clearly in the following parts.
To know who you are includes doing a SWOT analysis and comparing plans to actual sales illustrated in the article. It is very significant to realize the business itself after starting a business. Doing a SWOT analysis and comparing plans to actual sales present effective ways and perspectives to realize the business around. SWOT means strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. However, many entrepreneurs hate to do such the SWOT, holding the view that it is useless and waste of time. But the article points out that doing a SWOT is brainstorming, provides a great way for the strategy making and just needs a couple of hours a week.
To know who they are serving needs to talk to 10 well-chosen people and imagine a customer story. Talking to different people can bring about different ideas and angles to questions, and thus know better customers. Besides, by imagining a customer story can know the ideal customers and thus realize the differences between the ideal and real customers that a business faces.
To know what they want, or what the dream is, or visualizing a better future, is a large motivation to do business well, because the dream is like a light, guiding the business’s direction in the future. Meanwhile, just as what the article points, knowing the dream is vital for a business and sets clear steps to go ahead in the future.
All in all, I have learnt a lot both from my class and the article. They both teach me that it is very important to do business planning well at the beginning of the business. The article, especially, tells me quick and easy ways to do business planning.
