choose the article The Role of Business Ethics in Employee Engagement, written on November 4 of 2009 by Tom Monahan, the CEO of the Corporate Executive Board. The article mainly talks about the importance of business ethics in employee engagement by illustrating two real examples. Meanwhile, the author analyzes the endangered relationship between ethical behaviors and employee engagement with three factors and provides three suggestions for the business to increase and strengthen the relationship between the ethical behaviors and employee engagement, and thus create a much more engaged work force, and increased productivity.
I do agree with the author’s ideas, as what I have learnt from my class in chapter seven points that entrepreneurs should pay attention to their business ethics and social responsibility as well. Business ethics and social responsibility cannot be inevitable in this chapter. The article analyzes the importance of business ethics from the unique perspective of employee engagement, and indicates the relationship between them: the more business ethics is paid attention to, the more employee engagement, and thus the more work force and productivity. Besides, the author lists two real examples that ethical behaviors can result in different performance whether they are noticed or not. Therefore, the article is quite consistent with topics learnt from my class, as it provides a unique and special angle about the role of business ethics.At the same time, I learnt a lot from the article with two main large implications for business. These two implications make me realize the importance of business ethics and understand why business should not be lack of business ethics.
First, now business ethics are facing “perfect storm” with employee engagement across large numbers of companies in the world, though business ethics have strong links with employee engagement and are able to bring at least 9% productivity boost. According to the article, there are three different reasons leading to such the situation. They are the increase of employee cynicism to ethical principles, unhappy employees resulting in a shortfall of 7 percent productivity, and employee disengagement respectively. All these three factors presented in the article give rise to low levels of employee engagement and thus reduction of productivity.
Second, it is not so difficult to increase 9 percent productivity boost in a short time if managers of business pay attention to the role of business ethics in the business. The article provides clear and reasonable suggestions for leaders to seize the goal. The three suggestions are that leaders should ensure consistent messages and ethical behaviors at all levels, leaders should help employees realize their important role towards company’s strategy and leaders should help employees re-forage personal networks. These suggestions can help to strengthen the links of ethical behaviors and employee engagement, as they pay more attention to employees’ value and identification.
Without doubt, it is a fact that ethical behaviors can contribute to increase and drive productivity and performance in visible way, as ethical behaviors play a significant role in the growth of employee engagement. Meanwhile, business ethics help to make reasonable and right strategies for business to large extent.
