Chinese Overseas Students

近年来中国留学生的数量都在上升,许多学生正在考虑出国留学,一个重要的原因是在国际舞台中国经济的快速增长。例如,中国学生已经成为在美国最大的外国学生。其他因素如生活水平的进步和方便的交通工具大大促成了这一社会问题。国内总有成千上万的学生希望到国外学习,看似诱人的和令人兴奋的体验,但人们真的清楚地了解海外学生面临的问题和挑战?


In recent years Chinese overseas students are kept on the rise, many students are considering to study abroad, one important reason is the quick rise of Chinese economy in the international stage. For example, Chinese students has become the largest source of foreign students in the United States. Other factors like the advance of living standard and convenient means of transportation have greatly contributed to this social issue. There are always tens of thousands of domestic students out there expecting to study in a foreign country, which is seemingly a tempting and exciting experience, but do people really know clearly about the problems and challenges faced by the overseas students?


What personal problems will be following the Chinese overseas student issue? The first problem confronting most Chinese overseas students from my opinion is called language barrier. Chinese students usually pays more attention to exams and memory of English words. They wrongly think ‘to know enough English words’ equals to ‘be able to associate with others freely’. Yes, many of them probably passed important exams like GRE and TOEFL, but their oral speaking is far from native, they cannot have an effective communication with the local community, lack of an effective communication leads to a rather superficial relationship, and language skills can more or less decide how far one can go in a society. This means these students cannot fit well into the foreign social life. I heard there is someone with an English major background cannot order dishes in a foreign restaurant. How pathetic it is! This problem seems to be an easy one, but this is the very basic problem that many overseas students have to cope with seriously. The next trouble will be the interaction process among various students with different cultural backgrounds, this explains why international students are often said being seated in a grand melting pot. Traditional Chinese parents are like babysitters, they take care of every aspects of their children, so the only task of these students is to study and earn good marks. But what about the overseas ones who are going out into another country? They are obliged to take care of their daily life and study. They have to deal with renting a room, signing a contract and managing relations with classmates. They also have to manage their money to make ends meet. All these common experiences seem to be rather difficult to some Chinese overseas students, which is worrying and funny when it comes to the great ambitions of these students. This is an important point why traditional Chinese parents must open their eyes to let fly of their children so they can be better prepared to become a qualified modern international student.

After analysing the two main problems most Chinese overseas students may encounter, I believe there are social origins that are responsible for the problems when moving to a larger picture. In fact, these social origins are becoming more and more as a public spotlight now. No matter it is the language barrier trouble, or the interaction problem involving different cultures and minds, the main problem in my opinion lies in the traditional Chinese education system and education methods, and they should be made right and beneficial. The traditional education emphasizes too much on the exam results, the students having a higher grade are labelled as good students, and vice versa. Because things go in this way, students are taught to think more of exam results, and they value little of the thought process. For example, in America, there are always class activities, students are encouraged to work together and benefit from a brainstorm, in this case students will have much room to produce creative ideas. However, in China students are eager to find the only one accurate answer and then memorise them. They rarely take time to open their minds for more creative and even seemingly strange solutions. They rarely share their ideas together in the class because they have a lot of new things to learn and memorise. Of course, in terms of foreign language study, they focus more on writing and memory, they will say they have no real environments for oral language practice. And for the same reason, many Chinese students will do no house chores and take charge of their daily life, since all these are taken over by their parents. I would say that this kind of love is love in the name of harm, these students are deprived of their chance to sharpen and improve their ability of independent life and survival. That’s why the otherwise colourful and exciting overseas study life becomes a kind of pain and agony to them.

C. Wright Mills once said that personal biographies are linked to the social and historical context in which they are lived in his works entitled The Sociological Imagination. I deem this is quite reasonable, as revealed in the ancient Chinese story of moving three evictions by the mother of Mencius. This is exactly what people now think highly of education as well as home teaching. It‘s time that the traditional Chinese parents change their concept of study, which is originally an all-around and creative process. In today’s increasingly open world, there will be more and more Chinese overseas students, how to embrace the challenge and gain a more rewarding foreign study experience is a big question for all. If one overcomes the above mentioned troubles, he will possibly enjoy a happy and exciting foreign study and growth process.
