In Slave Religion, Raboteau explains a wedding ritual dated nearly 200 years ago. As you understand his description (begins p. 228), how does it help you to further understand the role of ritual and the lasting impact of culture among African Americans? (Some couples include this ritual in their modern weddings.)
In Slave Religion, Raboteau made a vivid description of a wedding ritual nearly 200 years ago. He described that “the most frequent method of marrying two slaves was the custom of jumping the broomstick”. At that time, this ritual is used to announce the marriage of two slaves without much ado, and more of than not, the slaves are not able to invite a clergy or their friends to witness their marriage. As is known, the tradition has been kept till now, in the hope of sweeping away past wrongs or warding off evil spirits by performing this ritual. However, nowadays, they are not as desperately as they were to prove the legality of their marriage, so it is reduced to a part of the wedding ritual of a typical African American marriage. They still convey their wishes for a better future life but have diminished in importance.
