I read the article named District Energy Saint Paul. This article is mainly about how District Energy, a company “founded in 1979 as a public-private partnership to provide reliable, cost-effective heating service in a northern metropolitan area” in America, uses renewable energy sources to provide hot water in North America. The primary source of hot water for District Energy is based on an “adjacent biomass-fueled combined heat and power (CHP) plan”, which is “the largest wood-fired facility serving a district energy system in the U.S.”. At the later part of this article which is also the main part, examples are given on how District Energy increases the efficiency of woody biomass and the conservation of energy. Two systems are mentioned, the Hot Water District Heating System and the Chilled Water District Cooling System. Both of the systems generated great benefits for both the economy and natural environment, which are the appropriate examples of environmental friendly production. There is a Chilled Water Storage mentioned in the article demonstrates how the company take full use of electricity ans conserve it properly. Lastly, Combined Heat and Power Plant is stated. This is plant is a combined heat and power plant which is fueled by clean urban wood residue, a form of biomass. This plant is a huge success using the sustainable, renewable woody biomass energy as its fuel and has produced large amount of revenues and benefits. This article provides a good example of how woody biomass works efficiently and sustainably and also listed many other facts associated with it, thus, I think this article is appropriate for us to use in the woody biomass lesson.
