In 1328, the French king Charlie IV died with no heir and inheritance disputes stormed the Capet Dynasty. Edward III of England attempted to succeed to the throne of France by his mother's relationship. But finally Philip of Valois took away the right of inheritance and France entered into the Valois. This caused strong dissatisfaction from Edward. Moreover, the two countries had a long history of trade disputes over Flanders. Then in 1337, Edward III declares war on Philip VI, which continued from time to time with almost non-stop for hundreds of years. It was called as "The Hundred Years’ War".
Throughout the war it experienced multiple phases of victory or defeat. Ultimately France took the final victory and regained the territory that England had occupied France. At the end of the war, Joan of arc played an important role and her stories have been even so far talked by French. Also the war improved military system, weapons and tactics and enhanced the national consciousness of French. However the protracted war going together the Black Death made France as the main battlefield almost depleted and so hard for people to live. Until the mid 16th century, the France population returned back to the level of the mid 14th century. The hundred years’ war ended in 1453 and became the symbol of the end of the middle ages.
