Lily

Lily During the book The Secret Life of Bees, by Sue Monk Kidd, the reader is able to see some of the many unique values or characteristics that Lily, the main character, holds. Even in the early stages of this book one is able to see Lily’s character traits, such as, her low self-worth and esteem, her faith in people, and also impulsiveness driven by her desire for a stable and loving family. It is not until Lily starts on her quest into her mother’s past that one can see fully the depth and trueness of these qualities. In all budding adolescents there is always low self esteem and a feeling of not fitting in. Although in The Secret Life of Bees, this low self-worth and self esteem is fueled by her cold unloving father who never supported Lily’s love for books and reading. He also referred to her, “as Miss Brown Nose in a Book and occasionally Miss Emily Big Head Diction” (16). Because of this almost constant insensitive criticism that Lily was put through, she acquires a very low self worth and also self image.
