A Rose For Emily is a remarkable story that is widely read and debated. Faulkners use of symbolism and his lack of a standard chronology create a story that has many interpretations among its readers. It cannot be said that one interpretation is exact to Faulkners, but since they have addressed so many widespread aspects of the story, it can be assumed that a lot of them touch upon Faulkners original intentions. Emilys father and Homer Barron are two very significant characters in the story. Their significance is not only due to the relationship they hold with Emily, but also because of the effects created by their relationship to Emily. Emilys father exploitation of Emily causes her deep psychological problems and is the cause for her unusual behavior.
Emilys father is a rich southern gentleman whose family holds a great amount of prestige and wealth in the town of Jefferson. During her early days (before her father died), Emily was a beautiful southern belle admired and adored by many. Her beauty captured the eyes of many men in the town.
