Loneliness Loneliness is a prevalent theme in both the novel catcher in the rye and the drama A streetcar named Desire. While both stories are very different and seem like they do not connect in any way, in actuality, they have quite a few joint themes, Loneliness being a very strong one. Holden Caulfield in The Catcher in the Rye, and Blanche Dubois in A streetcar named desire, both suffer from severe loneliness, its almost as if it were a disease. However, these two characters suffer from a different type of loneliness, they kind of loneliness they have doesn’t much involve people. They have isolated themselves, not only from people but also from the world as a whole. Holden Caulfield in The catcher in the rye is a very lonely person. Even when he was young he was lonely, after his brother dies of course. That is basically when it all started. Ali died and Holden felt guilty, almost as if he should have been the one to die.
