Hero

Hero During the course of this semester as a class we have made comparisons among our readings. We have read many insightful stories that examine the pattern of an adventure hero and examine life along with its many characteristics. Many of the stories that we have read have been related to mythical gods or super human creatures. In the story The Odyssey by Homer and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight by Burton Raffel this pattern remained consistent. Both Sir Gawain and Odysseus revealed qualities of chivalry while sharing similar patterns of an adventure hero. In both stories Gawain and Odysseus display characteristics of chivalry. The characteristics that Gawain and Odysseus display most are honor, allegiance, and fighting fairly. First Gawain and Odysseus both display honor by defending themselves or someone else. Gawain shows how he maintains his honor by accepting a challenge for King Arthur. During a Christmas dinner Arthur is interrupted by a Green Knight who wants to play a Christmas sport. In order to maintain the kingdoms prestige and fame, Gawain honors Arthur by rising to the challenge of the Green Knight. Gawain says to the Green Knight, “Let this challenge be mine” and in doing so he odysseus, gawain, green, adventure, knight, home, chivalry, honor, homer, hero, both, son, says, return, raffel, pattern, journey, cyclops, arthur, take, one, fairly, during, christmas, challenge, back, allegiance, read, penelope, odysseus’s, name, kingdoms, ithica, himself, gawain’s, display
