Their Eyes Were Watching God In the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God, the main character (Janie) faces many competing desires. The author (Zora Neale-Hurston) illuminates these desires and the novel as a whole with conflict. The main character (Janie) has recently returned to her hometown from burying a loved one. The women of her hometown are rude to Janie, and surprised that she is wearing overalls. (pg.2) Though they want to learn every aspect of her life, the women of Janie’s hometown are hesitant to go talk to Janie except for Pheoby. While talking with Pheoby, Janie recalls her childhood where she lived with her grandmother (Nanny) in a white family’s backyard. Janie thought she was a white child because she was raised with white people and treated no differently. (pg.9) While in school Janie’s clothes were better than the other children’s clothes and Janie is teased for wearing the nicer clothes given to her by white people. The children also tease Janie because she does not know where her father is. Janie wants to know where her father is because she has heard so many stories and is embarrassed and scared at the same time.
