Cherokee Indains It is Cherokee belief that at first there was only a brother and a sister. The brother hit the sister with a fish, and told her to multiply, so she did. In seven days she gave birth to her first kid. The seven days later she did it again, and again, and again. There were too many children to keep track of them, so they decided to be able to only have one kid a year. The Cherokee first settled in the southeastern portion of the United States in about 1300 A.D. The center of the Cherokee nation was Kituhwa, near Bryson City, NC, so the Cherokee Indians were often referred to as Ani-Kituhwagi, which meant “the people of Kituhwa”. The Cherokee Indains are a branch of the Iroquois nation. In 1838 the U.S Army made the Cherokee Indians leave their homeland and marched them to "Indian Territory" in what is today Oklahoma.
