What, besides our Constitution and pioneer spirit, made America unique' One thing that comes to mind is the American flag, the stars and stripes. It has always served us well as a symbol of Nationalism and patriotism. Though it was no small feat, with the diversity of ethnic backgrounds, sometimes hostile, this became the American experience. The American experience was freedom, racism, opportunities, judgment, war, and most of all a voice in their government. This experience created a unity within the people that still grows till this day. Nationalism is people’s sense of belonging together as a nation. Nationalism beginnings may be traced back to the disintegration, at the end of the Middle-Ages. Development of a political unit called the nation-state occurred. A nation-state is a political unit consisting of an autonomous state inhabited predominately by a people sharing a common culture, history, or language. During the development travel and communication improved, because of this improvement people became increasingly more aware of the part of their country that lay outside their own community.
