The Chaser The Chaser The Chaser, which is a short story by John Collier, shows prerequisite of love ironically. In the story, the main character Alan loves a girl named Diana. To realize his wish, which is to be with Diana, Alan visits an old man to buy a love potion. The old man shows him a “life-cleaner” as well as a love potion. The reason behind this is that the old man knows the inevitable result of the love potion. This result will be Alan’s return to the old to purchase the “life cleaner”. Alan is so set on making Diana fall in love with him, that he does not consider the consequences of any of this. While Alan does ask a few questions of the old man, including that type of love the potion entails, as well as the price of the potion, he does not pick up on certain things mentioned. For example, “Their effects are permanent, and extend far beyond the mere casual impulse.” This is the beginning of the snowballing characteristics that the old man describes to Alan. Obviously, the love Diana will have for Alan will be strong and very powerful.
