Is Oedipus Responsible' In Oedipus Rex, all of Oedipus’ complications were an effect of his own actions. It all commenced when the Oracle at Delphi announced to Oedipus that he was destined to murder his father and marry his mother. He made the decision to escape the life he knew to prevent this fortune from ensuing. He was not aware that by doing so he was empowering the prediction to occur and entering face first into his destiny of tragedy. When all is said and done, Oedipus was blind and convicted for the death of the king of Thebes. Although Oedipus was ignorant to the truths around him and was not conscious of the path he was embracing, Oedipus was required to take responsibility for his actions and choices. Oedipus’ first mistake was not inquiring who awarded him life. “A drunkard in his cups brawled out, ‘Aha! Sham father’s son!’” (Roche 53-54). Oedipus had discovered rumors that the people he recognized to be his birth parents were not. He had an intuitive feeling that the rumors were true, but he foolishly did not take make an effort to uncover the truth. Even when the oracle revealed to Oedipus his fate, he did not question who exactly his parents were. Oedipus assumed it was referring to the people he considered his parents, his adoptive parents in Corinth. To avoid fulfilling the prophecy, Oedipus abandoned his home. He did not comprehend that by fleeing he would collide with his birth parents, Laius and Jocasta, making the prophecy possible.

In the process of embarking from home, Oedipus encountered his birth father without realizing it, and murdered him. “For in a thrice this hand of mine had felled him with a stick and rolled him from the chariot stunned. I killed them all,” (Roche 55). Because of the words of the oracle, Laius and Jocasta shipped Oedipus away from Thebes. It was also the mentality Oedipus had for leaving Corinth, in the direction of Thebes. During his travel, Laius and his company attempted to drive Oedipus off the road, resulting in a scene in which Oedipus slaughtered the other men involved. It was not until after that Oedipus was informed that that had been his birth father. Even though Oedipus did not appreciate that was his father, he should not have been tempered so easily to annihilate someone, especially since he was trying to escape his destiny of being a slaughterer. Half of the prophecy was complete before Oedipus even realized it was an error. Oedipus’ next mistake was accepting his mother’s hand in marriage. “His children’s father and their brother; son and husband of his mother; bed-rival to his father and assassin,” (Roche 41). Oedipus stumbled across Thebes when the city was in a state of chaos. A sphinx was obliterating citizens for not being able to unravel her riddle and they had just discovered their king had passed away. Oedipus was able to answer the riddle immediately, saving the rest of the city. The people viewed Oedipus as a hero and desired him as their replacement king, through which Oedipus was to marry Laius’ wife, Jocasta. Since Laius had been Oedipus’ father, that made Jocasta his mother. Oedipus did not fathom these were his relatives, but he should not have accepted the title of king and husband to people he just met. He should have noticed that within a short period he had massacred a man and married the man’s wife, clearly fulfilling the prophecy. A plague infected the city for punishment of Oedipus’ actions that followed the prediction of the prophecy. “By banishment; or death for death. The city frets with someone’s blood,” (Roche 26). A plague was ending numerous lives in Thebes, including crops, unborn children, and citizens. Oedipus sent Creon to unearth why this plague was occurring by visiting Pythia, the place to receive word from Apollo. Creon reported that the god was outraged that the death of Laius had been unsolved and that the plague would continue until the assassin had been banished or destructed as well. Oedipus promised to settle this bloodshed and aid his people.

Of course, he did not realize he was the executioner and his death was the one the god required to bring justice to Laius’ death. Once everyone was cognizant Oedipus was the killer, he stabbed himself in the eyes and the city initiated action to punish him for the crime of butchery he committed. Oedipus was ignorant to much information pertaining to him, information that would have prevented him from making any of the decisions he did. It can be up for debate whether Oedipus is to blame for his fate. After all, it was destiny for these events to occur and most likely would have somehow anyways, even if Oedipus were educated about everything. However, he walked right into the mess he was in and made selections that had dire consequences. For these he is responsible, as they were his actions and decisions, and he was disciplined for these crimes.
