Power to Control: A Means to an End
The novel 1984 by George Orwell is all about control. The control of people, power, thoughts, emotions, and many other things, are brought up in this book. The book is truly about how anything can really be controlled by creative methods. The premise of this novel is to show the world a dystopia. This is very much achieved in the novel, since the world the novel depicts is frightening. The novel uses power to gain control and distort human values and emotions. Thus, in George Orwells novel 1984 the Party uses power to control society, the past, and peoples thoughts thereby perverting the most basic human rights.
The Party uses their power to implement many changes in society. These changes, inherently, lead to the control of the people. One major change is the use of the telescreen, a device created by the Party to watch people at all times. The Party then uses their power to put telescreens in houses, offices, and throughout the cities. Orwell writes, You had to live-did live, from the habit that became instinct-in the assumption that every sound you made was overheard, and, except in darkness, every moment
