Personality Changes In The Great Gatsby
The acclaimed novel The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, has won the world over somewhat due to its characterization. The exchanging of roles all throughout the novel with several characters shows just how fickle and alternating a person an be, as with Daisy Buchanan and Myrtle Wilson, Jay Gatsby and George Wilson, and Tom Buchanan and Jay Gatsby. This exchange is crucial to the plot since it gives the reader insight on each of the characters, so that the characters are viewed as round characters. Fitzgeralds effort to exchange the characters roles in the novel was very successful.
The first exchange is between Daisy Buchanan and Myrtle Wilson. These two characters are similar in several ways. These similarities seem to revolve around their marriages. Both have an affair at some point in the novel, and this is because, Neither of them can stand the person theyre married to (The Great Gatsby, p.33) As a result of the intolerance towards their spouses, both begin affairs. Both say that they love their husband and their lover. Daisy loves Tom and Gatsby, while Myrtle loves George and Tom. Daisys love for Gatsby is purely materialistic; she loves his shirts, his house, and
