Glory Movie Response Glory, when I hear and think about this word, many thoughts come to my mind. I think of the 54th regiment and the feeling of pride and commitment each individual showed. July 17,1862 was a very important day in history; this was that day that allowed African Americans to join the union army. More than 200,000 African Americans fought for the union. And sadly 38,000 of these men died. The civil war was a big part of history and the men who fought will always be remembered as heroes. To do this day, we remember all these men who gave up their lives and the dedication they showed. African Americans joined the northern army for a variety of reasons. The first reason is that, if they fought African American soldiers would be freed. If I were a slave, I would jump at this opportunity. Even though there was a chance of me dying, it still would be worth it. The feeling of pride and the chance to be free would make me want to become a solider. The next reason was that they were paid, and they received food and clothing.
