Moby Dick Moby Dick is probably the most famous novel of the 19th Century, and one of the best known of all time. When I first began the book, I knew it was about a giant whale, and little more. But when I finished, I realized this book had so much more to do with the people who bravely go in search of this creature, and you don’t actually meet the whale until the very end. The reader learns a lot about the characters through the way they live for capturing this whale. Ishmael narrates this book, beginning with the famous first line “Call me Ishmael.” Early on, he meets a companion, a friend, Queequeg, when he is forced to share a room with him. He finds out that Queequeg is an idol-worshipping cannibal, and at first this is hard for Ishmael, a good Christian to accept. But he soon overcomes his prejudices, and when the idol tells them to go to sea, Ishmael goes to find them a job on the Pequod, a whaling ship. Ahab is the powerful, commandeering captain of the ship who is in search of Moby Dick because the whale bit off his leg.
