Principles of Diversity, Equality and Inclusion in adult social care settings Diversity – Everybody is unique in their own way. We should be able to work in an environment and be accepted for whom we are and be respected by each and every one. Each individual is exceptional and we should be recognised for our individual differences. These include, gender, race, religion, ethnic minority, sexual orientation, age, physical ability or political beliefs. It is about understanding each other and moving beyond simple tolerance to embracing it with enthusiasm. It is extremely important to support and protect diversity. We value individuals and groups free from prejudice, and by fostering a climate where equity and mutual respect are essential. Equality- I know this as ‘Equal Opportunities’ this means it is based on the legal obligation to eradicate and comply with anti-discrimination legislation. Equality protects people from being discriminated against on the grounds of groups. For example sex, race, disability, age etc. Emphasising and merging the two principles together, diversity and equality can give an employee a sense of being accepted, appreciated, and positively motivating them to work at full capacity. Inclusion- Is about all of us being as one and not separate. The primary purpose of social inclusion is to eliminate discrimination and encourage social interaction/cohesion to inspire peaceful living in the society. Discrimination- To treat one particular group of people less favourably than others because of their race, colour, nationality, or ethnic or national origin. The law in Britain recognises two kinds of discrimination: direct and indirect. Direct discrimination occurs when a 'protected characteristic' such as race, colour, nationality, or ethnic or national origin is used as an explicit reason for discriminating. Indirect discrimination occurs when there are provisions, criteria or practices operating, which have the effect of discriminating against certain groups of people, by putting them at a disadvantage compared with others, and which cannot be justified as proportionate. Direct discrimination means treating one person less favourably than another on grounds of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, race, religion/belief, sex or sexual orientation. For example, a female candidate with the best qualifications and experience does not get an interview, but a male candidate with fewer qualifications does. Indirect discrimination is where for example; a job advertisement for an Indian restaurant worker, only seeks Indian people to work for them. Potential effects of discrimination- When a client is subject to discrimination they can be affected in a number of ways, although some of these signs are not always visible as the client will not show any emotion. These are some of the discriminative effects; physical, emotional, social and intellectual. The physical effects are: headaches, poor appetite, a change in eating, sleeplessness, and loss/gain of weight, deterioration of health, bruises, ulcers, lack of personal hygiene and lack of energy. When they are emotionally affected it can cause low self-esteem, lack of confidence, feeling unwanted, insecurity, becoming withdrawn, depression/stress, anxiety, sudden change in behaviour, lack of co-operation and learned helplessness. Socially the client will become isolated and have lack of friends, becoming withdrawn, unrecognized as an individual, feel like a stranger and inability to build relationships. If we use a child as an example to discrimination, they become restricted to education, poor performance in examinations, lack of achievements, poor job prospects, lack of skills, loss of motivation, lack of interest in anything and in later life absence from work. If we look at the long term emotional impact, it can then cause ill health and/or mental health problems. As a parent, family member or friend of the family, I believe it would also affect them in a massive way. For example if the child was Down syndrome, I would become highly defensive against any negative attitude towards them. I would display a high tendency, to overly protect them by hiding them away from society and become suspicious about any questions being asked or raised. As a friend, I would be loyal and become emotionally involved to offer help or assistance where possible, which can have an effect on their own family lives. It would seem the friend or family member is now carrying the burden on their behalf and feel isolated and lonely, helpless that they too have no support. A parent to a disabled child can feel misunderstood and often feel paranoid when taking their children into the public eye for example on holiday or on public transport. It can be very upsetting, a hard challenge for them and very stressful. Overall, I accept as true that parents/guardians with kids of misfortune, can start to resent families with ‘normal’ children who they think have life as ‘easy’ and those who complain about their kids and how hard times are for them. I think one of the neglected effects is on the people who are holding the prejudice or doing the discriminating. Because of their ignorance, these people are losing any opportunity to learn from or gain pleasure from the association with people that are different from them. A bully is someone who is a coward and who needs to feel better about him or herself so they target those they feel they can overpower physically or emotionally. In summary, the abuser is not only hurting others but doing more harm for them. They justify their actions as being acceptable and believing their victims deserves it. Through adolescence, the discriminator can show higher rates of aggression, anti-social behaviour, crime, difficulty in controlling their emotions and in some cases depression leading to suicide. It can be a continual cycle and run in families for those who have been the abuser. They can bring up their own children to bully and so the cycle and victimisation continues within our society. The importance of inclusive practice, in promoting equality and supporting diversity. Being able to accept and understand each other’s culture, race and religion is vital to successful social integration and a productive working environment. A successful diverse work environment can include people from different religions, races / ethnic groups, gender and also sexual orientation. Inclusive practice is understood to be attitudes, approaches and strategies taken to ensure that clients are not excluded or isolated from the community because of any of these characteristics.-Y
