House Of The Spirits The story of The House of the Spirits is one of great change through generations and of political change that occurs over time which affects all the characters in many ways. The structure of the big house on the corner is a metaphor for the structure of the entire novel. Esteban builds a house that on the surface is straightforward, if somewhat flamboyant. Similarly, The House of the Spirits can be read as a traditional romance novel, following a single family over several generations. However, the narrator informs us as Esteban builds the house that it will end up full of complicated, twisted, and impractical additions. The characters in the story are like points on a timeline that represent what is going on and when it occurs. The political change that occurred was nothing out of the ordinary, it was just something that happened as part of history, but it also seemed to affect the family because of the people involved in the politics. The fate of the Del Valle family had a lot to do with the politics of the times and the involvement with the members of the family.
