George Orwell The Life And Works Of George Orwell George Orwell, of Eric Arthur Blair, was a very complex and paradoxical figure. Although he started off as an anarchist, after 1936 he became a firm anticommunist. He persistently attacked the orthodoxies which he felt had corrupted intellectual liberty. He felt persistent nostalgia for the order and stability of the pre-1914 world and believed in the embryonic. As a novelist, essayist, and a political pamhleter, he finally serves as a barometer to an understanding of the conflicts and mood of the liberal writer working in a time of cultural and political crisis. George Orwell, or Eric Arthur Blair considering he never legally changed his name, was born to Richard Walmsey and Ida Limouzin Bair in Matihari, India, on June 25, 1903. Orwell’s father was an administrator in the department of the Indian Government.
