But if the reader were to look closer they would see that there are images from another “belief structure”. Spenser in his writing talks of other supernatural beings: “There, in gloomy hollow glen, she found a little cottage built of sticks and weeds, in homely wise, and walled with sods around, in which a witch did dwell in loathly weeds and willful want, all careless of her needs; so choosing solitary to abide, far from all neighbors, that her devilish deeds and hellish arts from people she might hide, and far off, unknown, whomever she envied.” (Brown 26) This quote was found in A Book of Witchcraft, which goes to show the influence Spenser’s writing has on other occults as they may have influence him. This verse gave people one of the first images of witches, which stayed with them for centuries. One popular occult, with parallel images, is that of the Tarot cards.
